The Koperasi Pedagang Kopi Ketiara in Sumatra, Indonesia is a women-run cooperative with over 890 grower-members. Ibu Rahmad, the current chairwoman, started the coop in 2008 after 20 years of operating and managing her family’s coffee business–purchasing cherries, processing the green, and selling to local traders. 

The passion and commitment of the women managers to work together in support of coffee production have enabled the Ketiara coop to expand and become an important supplier to larger coffee traders in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra. The cooperative members voted to become Organic and Fair Trade certified in 2012, committing to use the proceeds to create programs for health, education, and public infrastructure projects to benefit all coop members and their families and communities.
